At its third meeting in May 2007, the Conference of the Parties, by decision SC-3/19 on effectiveness evaluation, adopted the global monitoring plan for persistent organic pollutants (UNEP/POPS/COP.3/22/Rev.1, annex II) and the implementation plan for the global monitoring plan (UNEP/POPS/COP.3/23/Rev.1). It also adopted the Guidance on the Global Monitoring Plan for Persistent organic Pollutants , which has been prepared by the technical working group mandated by the Conference of the Parties in its decision SC-2/13. This guidance document provides the overall technical guidance for the implementation of the global monitoring plan in all United Nations Regions.
In accordance with Decision SC-3/19, a regional strategy for information gathering was implemented and regional and global monitoring reports compiled as contribution to the first effectiveness evaluation report (UNEP/POPS/COP.4/30) for the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties in May 2009.
