The POPs Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention and the Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention play a central role in reviewing and listing new chemicals under the two conventions.
Pursuant to decisions of the Conferences of the Parties, the BRS Secretariat’s technical assistance programme supports effective participation in the work of, and coordination among, the scientific subsidiary bodies of the Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions.
These activities aim to:
- Improve understanding of the processes for reviewing and listing new chemicals in Annexes A, B and/or C to the Stockholm Convention and in Annex III to the Rotterdam Convention;
- Strengthen the capacity of Parties and observers to submit information on chemicals under review and to comment on draft committee documents; and
- Support science-based decision-making by the Conferences of the Parties on the listing of new chemicals.
