Call for information in follow-up to twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention

Introduction

At its 12th meeting, the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention adopted the decisions contained in an addendum to the report of the meeting, document UNEP/POPS/COP.12/32/Add.1. Several of those decisions included invitations to Parties and others to provide information.

The following letter was sent to Parties and observers with a summary of the individual decisions that contain invitations for information and comments. The individual invitations to submit information are organized by relevant COP agenda items. Information sought in each item can be transmitted separately, since the deadlines for submission vary.

Response from Parties to these calls for information need to be transmitted by their duly designated Official Contact Point.  

Similar letters have also been prepared to solicit information sought in follow-up to 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention and 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention and are available on the Basel and Rotterdam Convention’s websites.

a. Each Party listed in the register of specific exemptions for the production and use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and PFOA-related compounds for the use of perfluorooctyl iodide (PFOI) for the production of perfluorooctyl bromide (PFOB) for the purpose of producing pharmaceutical products, listed in Annex A to the Convention, is invited to report to the Secretariat, justifying its need for the registration of that exemption

11. Global monitoring plan for effectiveness evaluation

a. Parties are encouraged to consider the regional strategies and the recommendations  and to engage actively in the implementation of the global monitoring plan and the effectiveness evaluation, in particular:

(i)    To monitor core media, such as air, water, human breast milk and human blood, for applicable substances and share the resulting data through their respective regional organization groups;

(ii)   To facilitate cooperation with relevant regional monitoring programmes and efforts under other multilateral environmental agreements, such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the Convention on Biological Diversity;

(iii)  To support the further development and long-term implementation of the global monitoring plan if they are in a position to do so.
