Geneva, Switzerland from 14 September to 16 September 2026
Venue: International Environment House - II (IEH-II), 7-9 Chemin de Balexert, Châtelaine, Geneva, Switzerland
Highlights:
DDT is listed in Annex B of the Stockholm Convention with its uses in disease vector control as an acceptable purpose in accordance with Part II of Annex B of the Convention. The DDT expert group is established by the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention (COP) to assess, every two years, the available scientific, technical, environmental and economic information related to production and use of DDT for consideration by the COP in its evaluation of continued need for DDT for disease vector control.
The twelfth meeting of the COP concluded that countries that are relying on DDT for disease vector control may need to continue such use – but only in very specific settings – until locally appropriate and cost-effective alternatives are available for a sustainable transition away from DDT, and decided to evaluate the continued need for DDT for disease vector control including that provided by the DDT expert group, at its thirteenth meeting of the Conferences of the Parties in 2027, with the objective of accelerating the identification and development of locally appropriate, cost-effective and safe alternatives.
Working Language: English
Meeting objectives:
- Undertake a situational analysis on the production and use of DDT and the conditions for such use;
- Evaluate the availability, suitability and implementation of alternative products, methods and strategies for Parties using DDT;
- Evaluate the progress in strengthening the capacity of countries to shift in a safe fashion to reliable or suitable alternative products, methods and strategies based on a review of the opportunities and needs in countries for sustainable transition;
- Evaluate and report on the recent outcomes of the intersessional process of consultations with Parties in the DDT register on a possible phase out plan for DDT and withdrawal from the DDT register.
- Make recommendations to the Conference of the Parties on the continued need for DDT for disease vector control and on any actions deemed necessary to reduce the reliance on DDT in the light of the above assessments.
Target audience: Members of the DDT expert group.
