By decision BC-III/19 the Conference of the Parties of the Basel Convention in 1997, selected South Africa as a site to establish BCRC for English-speaking countries in Africa. Africa Institute for the Environmentally Sound Management of Hazardous and other wastes (AIMHW), Pretoria was established for this purpose as an inter-governmental organization in March 2004 through an agreement between member states. The Centre was revived in 2007. Later, a framework agreement was signed in April 2012 with the Secretariat of Basel convention for its establishment as a BCRC. The centre was nominated to serve as Stockholm Convention regional centre in July 2010 for English speaking African Parties and has been endorsed in 2011 as regional or subregional centre for capacity building and the transfer of technology by COP 5 for four years. Recently, COP 7 has endorsed it again for another term of four years.

Expertise: ESM (environmentally sound management) of hazardous wastes and development of national plans/policy on various hazardous waste streams including PCB wastes.The centre aims to strengthen the capacity of its members in implementing the Conventions in chemical as waste clusters by mobilizing different academic and research institutions located in the member states.
