Publication to support discussions at CSD-18

In preparation for the 18th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18, New York, May 2010), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Division for Sustainable Development (UNDESA-DSD), the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention on POPs and UNEP Chemicals have compiled initiatives from around the world in the sound management of chemicals into a publication entitled “Practices in the Sound Management of Chemicals”, to be launched during the CSD-18.

The publication aims at facilitating the work of the Commission in assessing the current trends, emerging issues and priority areas towards the achievement of the 2020 sound management of chemicals.

The publication also makes the case for States to draw on each other’s successful practices and experiences in the sound management of chemicals around the world to improve their chemicals management.

Practitioners from different countries met in Geneva 3-4 December 2009 in the Workshop on Case Studies in the Sound Management of Chemicals to review the publication and to share their experience in the management of persistent organic pollutants, pesticides and other chemicals of priority concern. This workshop was co-organized by the UNDESA-DSD, the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and the United Nations Environment Programme Chemicals Branch. For more information please consult the workshop webpage.
