Invitation to submit comments on the draft RME on hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)

The sixth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention took place from 11 to 15 October 2010, in Geneva. The report of the meeting (document UNEP/POPS/POPRC.6/13) is available for downloading (PDF document).

In accordance with the procedure laid down in Article 8 of the Convention, the Committee examined the risk profile of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and decided that HBCD is likely, as a result of its long-range environmental transport, to lead to significant adverse human health and/or environmental effects such that global action is warranted and that it should proceed with the development of a risk management evaluation.

In accordance with paragraph 7 (a) of Article 8 of the Convention, the Committee invited Parties and observers to submit information specified in Annex F and the intersessional working group prepared the draft risk management evaluation based on the information.

The risk management evaluation will be used together with the risk profile by the Committee as the basis for its recommendation to the Conference of the Parties on whether the chemical should be considered for listing in Annex A, B, and/or C.
