Contaminated Site Toolkit

The Toolkit for POPs-contaminated site investigation and management was developed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Expert Group on POPs. The Toolkit aims to aid developing countries with the identification, classification and prioritization of POP-contaminated sites, and with the development of suitable technologies for land remediation in accordance with best available techniques and best environmental practices. 

The Toolkit focuses exclusively on the initial 12 POPs listed in the Stockholm Convention and is structured into five main modules on policy and legal issues, site investigation, site risk assessment, management of contaminated sites, and costing and financing implications. It is a training tool and self-directed manual and resource document for decision-makers, practitioners and a range of other stakeholders.

This module provides guidelines for assessing the human health risks of sites contaminated by persistent organic pollutants. It outlines how to conduct a generic Tier 1 approach, in which you use the information collected during the site investigation to compare contaminant concentrations against the recommended values for soil and groundwater. This module also presents the basic steps of a Site-Specific Risk Assessment, which identifies a site's contaminants, exposure pathways and receptors.
