Mexico City, Mexico, 8 - 10 June 2010

The overall objective of this workshop is to support the effective participation of Parties, experts and stakeholders in the Rotterdam Convention Chemical Review Committee (CRC) and the Stockholm Convention POPs Review Committee (POPRC).

The workshop, which is co-organised with the Rotterdam Convention, targets Stockholm Convention National Focal Points, Rotterdam Convention Designated National Authorities (DNAs), relevant stakeholders, as well as selected past and current CRC and POPRC members from the region. As a result of this workshop and, as part of the synergy process, participants will be aware of opportunities for information exchange and synergistic approaches in chemicals management at the national level, as well processes linked to chemicals’ review under the Conventions.

São Paulo, Brazil, 18 - 21 May 2010

On 26 August 2010, the amendments to the Stockholm Convention, listing nine additional persistent organic pollutants, will enter into force. In light of this, the workshop aimed at raising awareness on the steps to be taken by Parties to comply with their new obligations, including the process to review and update their national implementation plans. Furthermore, given that the next reporting deadline under the Convention is set up for 31 October 2010, the workshop was also an opportunity for participants to become familiarized with the reporting requirements and the enhanced version of the electronic reporting system.

The workshop targeted national experts from the Caribbean, who are contributing to the implementation of the Stockholm Convention as Official Contact Points or Focal Points, and who have a specific knowledge and experience with the management of unintentional releases of POPs.

Montevideo, Uruguay, 23 - 25 November 2009

The regional workshop for South America (and Mexico) took place from 23 to 25 November in Montevideo, Uruguay. The workshop, which was co-organised by the Basel Convention Coordinating Centre in Montevideo (also Stockholm Convention centre), gathered a total of 40 participants from 15 governments, 7 non-governmental organizations, academia/universities and private sector organizations from countries within South America (and Mexico) that are Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions.

Kingston, Jamaica, 2 - 5 February 2009

The training workshop targets trainers and national experts on the Environmentally Sound Management of PCBs and POPs wastes from the English-speaking Caribbean region. The objective of the workshop is to enhance the capacity of the participants to deliver further training on the concepts, principles and standards for the Environmentally Sound Management of POPs wastes, as presented in the Basel Convention technical guidelines on POPs wastes. The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit of the United Nations Environment Programme located in Kingston, Jamaica.

São Paulo, Brazil, 2 - 4 February 2009

The regional capacity building workshop on implementation of Article 5 and use of the guidelines on BAT&BEP was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 2-4 February 2009. The workshop aims at raising awareness and sharing experience between officials of the region regarding the implementation of Article 5 under the Convention (unintentional production of POPs) in particular in using the guidelines on BAT&BEP.

Montevideo, Uruguay, 20 - 22 August 2008

• To enhance the understanding of stakeholders on the processes of the POPRC;
• To increase the participation of countries in the review process, namely the identification and nomination of candidate chemicals, as well as the provision of information pertaining to the risk and the management of the chemicals under review for listing under the Convention;
• Develop competencies that will continuously assist countries to implement risk management, including and beyond new POPs;
• Try out the developed handbook in the region.
