The Regional Awareness Raising Workshop on Enhancing Cooperation and Coordination for the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions in Central and Eastern Europe aimed at offering a holistic approach to the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. A strong emphasis was put on the implementation of the Conventions at national and regional level in order to share good practices of coordination which facilitate joint-implementation. The workshop also provided training on the use of the Guidance on resource mobilisation in the field of chemicals and hazardous wastes.

Regional Capacity-Building Workshop on New POPs, the Process for Reviewing and Updating NIPs

The workshop aims at raising awareness on the recently adopted amendments to the Convention, listing nine new POPs in Annexes A, B and C of the Convention, which will enter into force on 26 August 2010; and on the implications at the national level of the new obligations arising herewith. Furthermore, the workshop offers an opportunity for participants to become familiar with the enhanced version of the online electronic reporting system in preparation for the second round of Party reporting. 

The workshop is organized by the Secretariat in cooperation with RECETOX, a Stockholm Convention regional centre in Central and Eastern Europe.

The regional training workshop targets national experts on the Environmentally Sound Management of PCBs and POPs wastes from the Central and Eastern European Region. The objective of the workshop is to enhance the capacity of the participants on the concepts, principles and standards for the Environmentally Sound Management of PCBs and POPs wastes, as presented in the Basel Convention technical guidelines. The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for Central and Eastern Europe located in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Training and capacity building on implementation of Article 5 and practical use of the Guidelines on BAT&BEP in conjunction with the Regional BAT and BEP Forum for Central and Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia (CEECCA) to Promote Strategies to Reduce or Eliminate Unintentionally Produced POPs from Industry.

The Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention is joining forces with the Stockholm Convention Unit of the Environmental Management Branch of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The Secretariat will held a one day training in practical use of the Guidelines on Best Available Techniques and Best Environmental Practices relevant to Article 5 and Annex C of the Stockholm Convention on 2nd of November 2009 in conjunction with the Launching meeting of the Regional BAT and BEP Forum for Central and Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia (CEECCA) to Promote Strategies to Reduce or Eliminate Unintentionally Produced POPs from Industry jointly organized by the Stockholm Convention Unit of the Environmental Management Branch of UNIDO, and the Ministry of Environment of Romania, to be held from 3rd to 5th November 2009 in Bucharest, Romania.

Note: Organization matters related to the event, including sending of invitation letters, will be handled by the Ministry of Environment of Romania.
