Workshop for Effective Participation in the POPs Review Committee

Bangkok, Thailand
from 3 to 5 September 2008

The objectives of the workshop were:

  • To enhance the understanding of stakeholders on the processes of the POPRC;
  • To increase the participation of countries in the review process, namely the identification and nomination of candidate chemicals, as well as the provision of information pertaining to the risk and the management of the chemicals under review for listing under the Convention;
  • Develop competencies that will continuously assist countries to implement risk management, including and beyond new POPs;
  • Try out the developed handbook in the region.

Highlights     

A three day regional workshop for effective participation in the work of the POPs Review Committee was held at Imperial Queen's Park Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, from 3 to 5 September, 2008.

The main objectives of the workshop were: to enhance the understanding and involvement of all stakeholders on the process for assessing candidate POPs in order to increase the participation of countries in the work of the POPRC; and to demonstrate and gather feedback of the handbook prepared by the POPRC intersessional working group for the above purpose.

The workshop was participated by the National Focal Points and key stakeholders of the Stockholm Convention from 13 countries of the Asia-Pacific Region (Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam).
The outcome of the workshop will be reported to the fourth meeting of the POPs Review Committee scheduled to meet from 13 to 17 October 2008 in Geneva.
