Training on data collection, information exchange and informed decision-making within IVM program

Nairobi, Kenya
from 29 to 31 August 2012

The project is to strategically follow-up on the initial workshops on IVM principles conducted in selected African countries and collaborate with the ongoing WHO/GEF DDT reporting project towards assurance of efficient implementation of IVM approach for reduced reliance on DDT for disease vector control, including following specific objectives:

  • Strengthening in-country coordinating mechanisms of all stakeholders for data collection and information exchange on sustainable and effective vector management;
  • Capacity strengthening on evidence-based decision making in vector control interventions;
  • Developing a case study on establishing and implementing IVM for advocacy in other countries and to train resource persons for future IVM training workshops at the regional level.

The Regional Awareness-Raising Workshop on Enhancing Cooperation and Coordination for the Implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions will be held for the French-speaking African countries in Dakar, Senegal.

The workshop offered a holistic approach to the implementation of the three conventions. The emphasis was placed on identifying synergies and linkages at the national level as a way to foster the implementation of the conventions' requirements. In this regard, a wide range of issues were addressed among others: ways of mobilizing resources and developing/strengthening national legal/institutional frameworks.

The training, organized by the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention, was successfully conducted at the International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Nairobi, Kenya, with the technical support of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The initiative was designed by the Global Alliance for the development and deployment of alternatives to DDT for disease vector control to support in-country capacity practice IVM approach using all available tools with cross sector coordination to overcome the complexity and cost of implementing alternatives to DDT.

The workshop, which was co-organised by the Ministry of Environment of Mali and the African Stockpile Programme in Mali, gathered a total of 53 participants from 19 governments, 4 inter-governmental organizations and 4 non-governmental organizations.

The overall objective of this workshop is to support the effective participation of Parties, experts and stakeholders in the Rotterdam Convention Chemical Review Committee (CRC) and the Stockholm Convention POPs Review Committee (POPRC). 

The workshop, which is co-organised with the Rotterdam Convention, targets Stockholm Convention National Focal Points, Rotterdam Convention Designated National Authorities (DNAs), relevant stakeholders, as well as selected past and current CRC and POPRC members from the region. As a result of this workshop and as part of the synergy process, participants will be aware of opportunities for information exchange and synergistic approaches in chemicals management at the national level, as well processes linked to chemicals’ review under the Conventions.
