Regional focus switches to Indonesia

The Conference of the Parties of the Basel Convention in 1995 selected Indonesia to host one of the Basel Convention Regional Centres. Subsequently, a Framework Agreement was signed in 2004 to this effect. The same Centre was endorsed by the Conference of the Parties of the Stockholm Convention in 2013 as a Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for an initial 2 years, extended for another 4 years by COP.7.

Expertise of the centre includes industrial waste, particularly hazardous waste management; e-waste inventory; inventory of POPs and NIP updating; conducting national and regional training and awareness-raising workshops on issues relating to the Basel Convention, Rotterdam Convention, Stockholm Convention and Minamata Convention. Some of the notable project/activities undertaken by the centre are listed below:

  • Review and update of the NIP of Indonesia
  • Global workshop on Updating NIPs, 8-10 December 2015, Jakarta, Indonesia
  • Global workshop to promote the use of guidance materials and knowledge sharing among developing countries on industrial POPs (PBDEs, PFOS ad HBCD) under the Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, 22-24 Nov 2016, Jakarta, Indonesia

At present BCRC-SCRC Indonesia is currently undertaking the following projects:

  • Mercury emissions from the coal-fired power sector in Indonesia (Jan-Dec 2017)
  • Global Monitoring Plan on POPs in Indonesia (2017-2020)

Parties served: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
