Twentieth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC.20)

Rome, Italy, from 23 to 27 September 2024

Venue: FAO Headquarters, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00153 Rome, Italy

Overview

The twentieth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention will take place from 23 to 27 September 2024, back to back with the twentieth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention.   A pre-meeting will be held online, the date of which will be communicated by the Secretariat in due course.

At its twentieth meeting, the Committee will consider the draft risk management evaluation for chlorpyrifos. The Committee had adopted the risk profile for chlorpyrifos at its nineteenth meeting and concluded that it met all the criteria warranting global action.

The Committee will also discuss the outcomes of the work of the intersessional working groups in assessing information provided by Parties and observers on long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids and related compounds and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins – both industrial chemicals - to further strengthen the recommendations to be sent to the Conference of the Parties in 2025 on their listing in Annex A with specific exemptions.

Further, the Committee will discuss the activities undertaken by the intersessional working group on persistent organic pollutants in stockpiles, products and articles in use and in wastes as requested by the Conference of the Parties in its decision SC-11/12.  The Committee will also provide comments on the draft report prepared by the Secretariat, evaluating the progress made by Parties towards eliminating brominated diphenyl ethers contained in articles and reviewing the continued need for the specific exemption as set out in paragraph 2 of parts IV and V of Annex A to the Convention.

Please see factsheets of the chemicals under review for further information.

Working languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
