Environmentally sound management of POPs wastes

Background

The national implementation plans and the national reports submitted by the Parties indicate the existence of a large quantity of waste contained or contaminated with POPs including PCBs, obsolete pesticide stockpiles. The Secretariat provides support to Parties to facilitate the process of disposal of POPs wastes in the environmentally sound manner.

Objectives

• Facilitate in collaboration with appropriate body of Basel Convention on developing and updating of General technical guidelines on waste containing POPs and on specific POPs wastes; development and updating of guidance on labelling of article containing POPs; BAT/BEP guidance on recycling and disposal of article containing POPs, etc.
• Support in the efforts made by Parties in collaboration with Global Environment Facility together with its implementing and executing agencies including regional centres on disposing of such waste, e.g., demonstration project on regional approach in disposing of PCB waste in Francophone Africa.
