POPs listed under the Convention

Background

Parties are required to take various actions on the POPs that are listed in different annexes, e.g. to eliminate the POPs that are listed in annex A by putting a complete ban on their production and use; restricting the use for specific purpose only for those listed in annex B; and reducing releases of unintentionally produced POPs those listed in annex C.

Objectives

Various training and capacity building activities including some pilot projects enable Parties to take appropriate actions to deal with the POPs listed in various annexes in conjunction with other partners such as Regional Centres mainly in following areas:

• Elimination or restriction of the production and use of intentionally produced persistent organic pollutants;
• Alternatives to DDT and reducing the need for the use of  DDT;
• Reduction or elimination of releases of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants through the promotion of BAT and BEP;
• Identifying and handling of products and  articles containing POPs.
