Following the recommendations of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee at its fourth meeting, the Conference of the Parties of the Stockholm Convention at its fourth meeting decided to list the following nine new persistent organic pollutants in annexes A, B or C to the Convention: alpha hexachlorocyclohexane; beta hexachlorocyclohexane; chlordecone; hexabromobiphenyl; hexabromodiphenyl ether and heptabromodiphenyl ether; lindane; pentachlorobenzene; perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF); tetrabromodiphenyl ether and pentabromodiphenyl ether (decisions SC-4/10–18).

1. The fifth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee was held at the Varembé Conference Centre in Geneva from 12 to 16 October 2009. Mr. Reiner Arndt (Germany), Chair of the Committee, declared the meeting open at 10 a.m. on Monday, 12 October 2009.

The World Health Organization International Programme on Chemical Safety has developed a draft framework for assessing the combined risk from exposure to multiple chemicals via all relevant routes and pathways. The draft, entitled “Risk assessment of combined exposures to multiple chemicals: a WHO/IPCS framework”, is contained in annex I to the present note and two case studies, one on polybrominated diphenyl ethers and the other on carbamates, are contained in annexes II and III, respectively.
